DANGER DANGER DANGER
There are places in the internet that will tell you about this and say
that its easy and safe and not dangerous. WRONG!
These pipe pieces are for hooking into the natural gas in your house and
running the gas through a quality airline OUTSIDE to a natural gas
generator that can power your house in the time of a major disaster or
power failure. Hurricane, end of the world etc....
I cover this in detail in my TSP Show on Generators (Generator Show #2)
which would be my 13th show on The Survival Podcast (TSP). Make
sure you go to
http://www.Solar1234.com to listen to the show.
In the SHOW, and IN HERE, I will tell you NOT to
do this. This would be a last ditch emergency only
situation and then you should only have your buddy a master plumber
install it for you. In the show and in here, I will
tell you, that if you want a natural gas generator outside to power your
house, have a licensed insured certified plumber
install natural gas pipe from your house to a safe area outside of your
house for the generator. They would install this just like
they would install natural gas pipe for a natural gas BBQ.
They can do it legally and to code for your location. |

WARNING. IT IS
DANGEROUS AND AGAINST CODE TO HOOK THIS UP. We are NOT
suggesting you do this.
==================
These are all the parts from Home Depot, Lowes or your local
hardware store will have them.
All pipe threats are NPT (National Pipe Thread) the standard in
the USA. |

==================
This is what it looks like assembled. You have to make
sure that you use YELLOW GAS PIPE TAPE, also called PTFE - GAS -
TAPE.
You also MUST screw everything down TIGHT with a pipe wrench to
make sure there is a good seal. Hand tight will NOT do it,
also, a pair of pliers probably will not make it tight
enough. Also..the YELLOW gas valve may come in RED
depending on its age and where you purchased it or what country
you are in. |

This is a full photo of a natural gas hot water heater. It
is at the bottom that the above unit is going to be connected. |

==================
AFTER Turning OFF the natural gas to the hot water heater, the
bottom cap is what you would remove and then start to screw on
the adapter above. NOTE: you might NOT be able to screw
the whole adapter on. You will probably have to assemble
it to the pipe piece by piece with a pipe wrench and natural gas
pipe tape, because you could not screw the whole assembled unit
onto the bottom because you could not turn it, it would hit the
hot water heater as you tried to turn the whole thing on.
So...some assembly required at the bottom of the natural gas
pipe, piece by piece.
MAKE SURE THE NATURAL GAS IS TURNED OFF.

This is a photo of a natural gas water heater (bottom right) and
the location of the natural gas valve IN the ON POSITION (gas is
flowing!)
The natural gas valve is usually close or very close to the hot
water heater, in many installations it is located on the
vertical pipe you see that is going DOWN to the bottom of the
hot water heater. |

This is a photograph of the natural gas valve going to the hot
water heater in the ON POSITION... gas IS flowing. Turn it
CLOCK WISE 90 degrees so the gas flow is OFF and not flowing to
turn off the gas to the hot water heater. |

Irwin Vise Grip 2-Inch Jaw Capacity 14-Inch Cast Iron Pipe
Wrench $24.04
If you are going to put something like this
together, along with your local master plumber and city
inspector, then you will need a very good pipe wrench.
This is exactly the type of pipe wrench you need to screw
everything together nice and tight so there are no gas
leaks...do NOT forget to use the yellow pipe tape, you'll
see it below. |

Lasco 17-7749 1/2-Inch Male Pipe Thread by 3/8-Inch Hose Barb
Brass Adapter $6.87
This is a 1/2" NPT Pipe Thread adapter that
adapts down to 3/8" ID hose, just like the air line I have
listed up here for you to look at. In the photos
above, the parts from Home Depot, they did NOT have this item in
stock, so I had to use an adapter to go from 1/2" NPT pipe
thread to 3/8" NPT Pipe Thread, and then I used a 3/8" NPT pipe
thread brass adapter to go to the 3/8" hose barb.
You can just get this one piece and save a step. Get it
here or look for it in your local store. These parts
are in the plumbing isle or the next isle over in most of the
big box stores. They will be in individual plastic
bags and hanging on the wall. |

Precision Brand M6S Micro Seal, Miniature All Stainless Worm
Gear Hose Clamp, 5/16" - 7/8" (Pack of 10) $7.14
If you did do something as dangerous as hooking
this up to your house natural gas lines, and then did use an air
line to run the natural gas outside to a generator, you would
want to make sure that the line was securely attached to the
3/8" hose barb with a worm gear hose clamp just like this one.
That way, if your you, your child or dog trip over the hose it
will not be as likely to be pulled off the natural gas hook up,
build up in the house and then find an ignition source and blow
your house into a million pieces. This could be deadly for
anyone in the house at the time. |

GOODYEAR 46506 3/8-Inch by 100-Feet 250 PSI Rubber Air Hose With
1/4-Inch MNPT Ends and Bend Restrictors $44.33
If you are going to run natural gas through an
airline, then it might as well be one of the highest quality air
lines you can get. I personally own and use Goodyear air
lines in my shop. They are super heavy duty and will take
a lot of abuse. Even though these have 1/4" MNTP ends on
them, you would just end up cutting them off and putting the
line on the hose barbs above going to the natural gas hook up.
You will need to put the same NPT to hose barb attachment on
your generator Demand Flow Regulator. Make sure
everything is screwed down with worm clamps. This is a 100
foot cord, if you only need 60 or 80 feet to run to a generator,
then you are better off cutting it to size.
If
you only need a 50 Foot Goodyear Air Hose then get this one for
$35.99 DO NOT use air line quick connect connectors to
hook up this air line to your natural gas supply or the
generator. Those have TINY holes in them and the natural
gas is at only about 0.15 psi instead of 150 psi air, and it
will not pass through those holes very easily and it will starve
your generator for fuel. Of course you should be taking my
advice and NOT doing ANY of this. |

Merit Brass Stainless Steel 316 Ball Valve, Unibody, Lever, 1/2"
NPT Female $13.06
These valves are also available at your hardware
/ big box store. These will work on natural gas, but they
are not natural gas approved values. These are
called LEVER VALVES and why am I showing this to you ?
Because if you did do this very dangerous and not recommended
installation then with this valve you can use a lock and LOCK IT
OUT, you can LOCK IT OFF so no one can accidently open it up and
let natural gas go free in your house and cause a fire or
explosion hazard...and it is a hazard. You can get
this one right from Grainger for $17.
